Following the intense Merseyside derby between Liverpool and Everton, which ended in a 2-2 draw at Goodison Park, both clubs have strongly denounced the racial taunts aimed at Everton player Abdoulaye Doucoure.
The dramatic match saw Everton captain James Tarkowski scoring a crucial equalizer in the seventh minute of extra time, leading to jubilant celebrations among the home fans. However, the post-match scenes turned ugly as Liverpool substitute Curtis Jones clashed with Doucoure, who was celebrating in front of the visiting supporters.
Referee Michael Oliver issued red cards to both Doucoure and Jones, as well as to Liverpool manager Arne Slot in the aftermath of the brawl.
In a joint statement, the two Premier League clubs expressed their condemnation of the racial abuse, stating, “Such abuse is reprehensible and will not, and should not, be tolerated. Together, the two clubs will collaborate with Merseyside Police in their investigation to identify the individuals responsible for these disgraceful actions.”
Despite the tension on the pitch, Doucoure took to social media after the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, sharing a photo of himself showing appreciation to the home fans. Unfortunately, the post was marred by a series of racial slurs directed towards the player.
The clubs also urged fans and individuals to report any instances of online abuse and harassment, emphasizing the need for social media platforms to take a zero-tolerance stance against such behavior. They called on the platforms to take responsibility and enforce strict measures to ban abusive users.
