The Lions are facing a tough challenge as they aim to secure a spot in the top four of the United Rugby Championship (URC) by the end of the season. Currently sitting in 11th place on the log, they have dropped from sixth since the URC resumed after a break for Champions and Challenge Cup action. The team suffered a 29-10 defeat to the Stormers in Cape Town in their only game during that period, while most other URC teams played twice.

Despite their current position, the Lions are only seven points behind fourth-placed Cardiff and have two games in hand over many of the teams above them. This gives them a realistic chance of climbing the standings in the coming weeks. With only two home games played so far this season, the Lions have a favorable schedule ahead with a series of home matches that could work in their favor.

The Lions started the season strongly with four consecutive wins, including two bonus-point victories against Ulster and Edinburgh at home, as well as wins over Dragons and Zebre on the road. However, they have faced setbacks with losses to Leinster and Munster in Ireland, as well as the defeat to the Stormers. These results have highlighted areas for improvement if they are to achieve their goal of finishing in the top four.

Coach Ivan van Rooyen has emphasized the importance of winning key away games in order to compete at the highest level in the URC. Despite the recent losses, he remains optimistic about the team’s prospects and is focused on the challenges ahead. Van Rooyen is confident that the Lions can bounce back in January and make a strong push towards the top four.

Looking ahead, the Lions have a tough schedule in the first few months of the new year, but they are excited about the prospect of a run of home games that could work in their favor. Van Rooyen and his team are determined to make a statement in the URC and are committed to achieving their goals for the season. With a refreshed mindset and a focus on improving their performance in key matchups, the Lions are ready to take on the challenges that lie ahead in the competition.
