The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has called on all Ghanaians to embrace sanitation as a national practice and legacy during the relaunch of the National Sanitation Day (NSD).
The event, which was graced by President John Dramani Mahama, Ministers of State, Members of Parliament, Traditional Leaders, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), as well as Civil Society Representatives, was held under the theme “a clean environment, our responsibility” on Saturday, September 6, 2025 at the Institute of Local Government Studios in Ogbojo-Accra.
In her welcome address, Hon. Ocloo emphasized that the National Sanitation Day should not just be seen as a one-time event, but rather as a continuous effort to build a cleaner and healthier Ghana. She stressed the need for sanitation to become a culture ingrained in the daily lives of Ghanaians, rather than just a sporadic activity.
The Regional Minister assured the President and other dignitaries of the full commitment and support of the people of Greater Accra in this sanitation campaign. She mentioned that the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council, in collaboration with all 29 MMDAs, will spearhead the initiative and urged citizens to actively participate in the campaign.
Hon. Ocloo also highlighted the importance of expanding public involvement through traditional and modern communication platforms to raise awareness and encourage participation. She emphasized the role of unity and responsibility in achieving a cleaner Ghana, stating that it is only possible if citizens embrace discipline as a collective value.
The relaunch of the National Sanitation Day signifies the government’s renewed focus on addressing waste management challenges. Hon. Ocloo underscored the significance of partnerships between government, local authorities, and citizens in ensuring cleaner communities.
The event concluded with a reminder of the importance of patriotism, hygienic sanitation, and environmental conservation in achieving the goals of the initiative. The relaunch of the National Sanitation Day aims to instill a culture of cleanliness among all Ghanaians and will be observed on the first Saturday of every month, mobilizing individuals, households, community groups, businesses, and public institutions to maintain basic environmental standards.
In conclusion, the relaunch of the National Sanitation Day is a nationwide campaign that focuses not only on government directives but also on the everyday habits of ordinary Ghanaians. It is a collective effort to build a cleaner and healthier Ghana for future generations.
