Borussia Dortmund Striker Serhou Guirassy Secures Last-Minute Victory for Guinea in AFCON Qualifiers
In a thrilling match on Saturday, Borussia Dortmund striker Serhou Guirassy scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to lead Guinea to a crucial 1-0 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The 28-year-old forward capitalized on a cross at the far post, blasting the ball past DR Congo’s goalkeeper Dimitry Bertaud. This goal marked Guirassy’s sixth in the qualifiers, making him the tournament’s top scorer, ahead of Morocco’s Brahim Diaz with four goals.
With this win, Guinea now sits at the top of the table with nine points, two points ahead of Tanzania. A draw in their upcoming match against Tanzania in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday will secure Guinea’s spot in the AFCON finals.
DR Congo’s defeat ended their impressive streak of eight consecutive clean-sheet victories in qualifiers. The Congolese team had reached the semi-finals of the 2024 AFCON, eliminating Guinea in the quarter-finals.
Earlier in the day, Tanzania secured a 2-0 victory over Ethiopia in Kinshasa, with goals from Simon Msuva and Feisal Salum. Msuva opened the scoring with a header from a corner in the 15th minute, while Salum doubled the lead 16 minutes later with a well-placed header after his initial shot was saved by goalkeeper Seid Habtamu.
Guinea and Tanzania are among the 11 teams competing for the final five spots in the 24-nation AFCON tournament. The intense competition in the qualifiers promises an exciting climax on Monday and Tuesday.
