Reality TV star and content creator Lasizwe Dambuza has made a bold and selfless decision by urging his fans not to vote for him at this year’s South African Social Media Awards (Sasmas). Despite receiving three nominations for African social media star of the year, most popular content across platforms, and social media personality of the year, Lasizwe believes that his supporters should not have to spend money on votes.

In a heartfelt video shared on social media, Lasizwe expressed his gratitude for the nominations, stating that the recognition alone was a win for him. He emphasized that the paid voting system did not align with his values, especially considering the challenging economic circumstances in the country.

Lasizwe emphasized, “I don’t believe that you should pay to show support, especially in the country we live in and the economy we live in. It’s crazy right now. That money could go towards bread, electricity, taxi fare, actual survival stuff. Not you voting for me.”

The social media star made it clear that he would only ever ask for votes when the process is free. He humbly stated, “I can’t in good conscience ask you to spend your hard-earned money so that I can hold a piece of glass that will collect dust.”

Lasizwe’s stance on not asking for votes highlights his focus on impact rather than accolades. He believes that the nomination itself is impactful enough and does not want his fans to prioritize voting for him over their own financial needs.

The 2025 Sasmas will showcase and celebrate South Africa’s top digital influencers, with the winners set to be announced at an event on 22 November 2025. Lasizwe’s message of prioritizing essentials over clout serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible spending in today’s economic climate.
