Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta Traumatised After Being Declared Fugitive by OSP
Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has revealed that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is experiencing trauma after being declared a fugitive by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
During a press conference on Wednesday, 12 February 2025, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng announced that Mr Ofori-Atta was wanted by the OSP for his alleged involvement in causing financial loss to the state in five high-profile cases. These cases include the National Cathedral project, the ambulance spare parts deal, the GRA-SML contract, and the termination of a contract between the ECG and Beijing Technology.
Afenyo-Markin disclosed that he had spoken to Mr Ofori-Atta, who is currently in the United States for medical treatment. The former minister was shocked by the news but assured Afenyo-Markin that he would return to Ghana to cooperate with investigations once his medical treatment is complete.
“Mr Ken Ofori-Atta, as of this morning, I had an extensive engagement with him. He is traumatised by the use of such a label against him. But he remains confident that his God is with him. He is currently undergoing medical treatment.”
Afenyo-Markin also mentioned that he had a conversation with the Chief of Staff, who confirmed that Mr Ofori-Atta had written to him regarding the situation. The Chief of Staff assured Afenyo-Markin that Ofori-Atta’s return to Ghana would happen in due time.
Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga issued an apology to Mr Ofori-Atta, emphasizing the importance of respecting his fundamental human rights. Ayariga acknowledged that the raid on Ofori-Atta’s residence was led by Richard Jakpa and deemed the incident as unintentional and regrettable. He assured that such actions would not be repeated.
