Ghanaian actress Kala Kumasi recently voiced her strong dissatisfaction with the management of VIP bus services after a harrowing travel experience that left her and several passengers stranded and standing for part of their journey. The incident took place on Monday, April 29, 2025, when the actress boarded a VIP bus from Kumasi to Accra for a scheduled media appearance. However, what was supposed to be a routine journey turned into a nightmare.
The bus unexpectedly broke down near Nsawam, causing significant delays and discomfort for all passengers on board. Although a replacement bus was eventually sent, it arrived already full to capacity. Consequently, Kala and some of her fellow travelers had to stand for the rest of the journey to Accra, an experience she described as “dehumanizing and disgraceful.”
Kala Kumasi, known for her vibrant roles in Kumawood films and her outspoken advocacy on social issues, did not hold back in her criticism of VIP bus services. She called for stricter regulatory oversight over public transport companies, urging the Ministry of Transport and relevant agencies to ensure that bus operators comply with safety and customer service standards. In her words, “It is unacceptable that in this day and age, a well-known transport company like VIP would treat passengers in this manner. We pay for comfort and safety, not to be stranded and made to stand like second-class citizens.”
The actress emphasized that her concerns were not just about her personal experience but also about the numerous Ghanaians who face similar poor service on a daily basis because they have no other transportation options. She insisted that changes must be made to improve the quality of service provided by bus operators.
Despite Kala Kumasi’s public criticism, VIP management has yet to respond to her claims. However, her comments contribute to the mounting pressure on commercial transport providers to enhance their services in the face of increasing fares and competition from alternative transportation options like ride-hailing buses and smaller private operators.
As the debate over the quality of public transport services in Ghana continues, it is clear that Kala Kumasi’s voice carries weight in advocating for better treatment of passengers and improved standards within the industry. Her call for action serves as a reminder that the comfort and safety of travelers should always be a top priority for transport companies.
