President Joe Biden to Address Transatlantic Slave Trade Legacy in Angola
President Joe Biden’s upcoming trip to Luanda will include a visit to Angola’s National Museum of Slavery, where he will address the transatlantic slave trade and its lasting impact. One of the focal points of his visit will be the 17th-century Capela da Casa Grande, a historical site where enslaved individuals were forcibly baptized before being transported across the Atlantic to the Americas.
As part of efforts to confront the history of the transatlantic slave trade, the United States has pledged $229,000 to support the restoration of the museum. Additionally, Washington has expressed its support for Angola’s initiative to designate the Kwanza corridor, a significant route used to march captured slaves to the coast, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
President Biden’s itinerary will also include a visit to the port of Lobito, where he will highlight $4 billion of Western investment in the Lobito corridor. This move signifies a renewed interest from the US in Africa, particularly in light of China’s increasing influence on the continent.
