Olympic Javelin Throw Silver Medallist Sets Sights on New Goals
Jo-Ane du Plessis, formerly known as Jo-Ane Van Dyk, is a rising star in the world of javelin throw. After experiencing some significant changes in both her personal life and career, she is now settled in Cape Town with her husband Johan du Plessis, ready to take on the 2025 season.
While her coach, Terseus Liebenberg, remains in Potchefstroom, Du Plessis has found a balance by splitting her time between Cape Town and Potch for training. Adapting to new surroundings and training facilities has been a challenge, but she is starting to feel more at home in her new environment.
Aiming for New Heights
After a breakthrough season last year that saw her achieve a personal best of 64.22 meters and claim an Olympic silver medal, Du Plessis is setting her sights even higher for this year. Her goal is to surpass the 65-meter mark and secure a podium finish at the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
“Breaking the 65-meter barrier is my target for this year, and I also have my eyes set on a medal at the World Championships,” Du Plessis stated.
Long-Term Aspirations
While Du Plessis acknowledges that challenging Sunette Viljoen’s national record of 69.35 meters is a lofty goal, she sees it as a long-term ambition that she hopes to achieve in the future.
“Breaking the national record is something I aspire to do down the line, but for now, my focus is on reaching 65 meters. At 27, I believe I am approaching my prime, so anything is possible,” she added.
