The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office recently honored the memory of K-9 officer Graffit by unveiling a stunning statue dedicated to the heroic German shepherd. Graffit tragically lost his life on February 13, 2023, while bravely pursuing a suspect near the Colorado School of Mines in Golden. The suspect callously shot Graffit during the pursuit, causing irreparable harm.
Deputy Zachary Oliver, who worked closely with Graffit, shared heartfelt sentiments about his fallen partner. Graffit was not just a colleague but a beloved member of the Oliver family. On the day of his untimely death, Graffit’s actions saved numerous lives, a testament to his unwavering dedication to duty.
The memorial statue serves as a poignant reminder of Graffit’s sacrifice and valor, as well as a symbol of the outpouring of support from the community. The project was made possible through generous contributions from the public, as well as the talent and dedication of the artist and builder involved in its creation. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received throughout the process.
The individual responsible for Graffit’s death, Eduardo Armando Romero, faced justice for his heinous actions. Romero pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including aggravated cruelty to animals, identity theft, menacing, driving under the influence, and second-degree motor vehicle theft. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison as part of a plea deal, with additional charges being dismissed.
The sentence for Romero will be served consecutively to another existing sentence he is serving in Denver, as confirmed by the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office. The closure brought by Romero’s sentencing provides some solace to those who mourn Graffit’s loss and seek justice for his tragic end.
