Supporters had the chance to engage with the world Test champions once again as the Proteas team returned home to a warm reception in Sandton. The team’s historic victory in the World Test Championship final against Australia marked South Africa’s first major cricket title in 27 years, sparking a wave of national pride among fans.

After arriving at OR Tambo International on Wednesday, the Proteas squad participated in an activation event at Nelson Mandela Square on Thursday, giving supporters another opportunity to interact with their cricketing heroes. Among the fans present was former Transvaal cricketer Abdul ‘Jack’ Manack, who expressed his disappointment at not being able to witness the victory firsthand at Lord’s but was elated to welcome the team home.

Manack emphasized the significance of the Proteas’ achievement in uniting the country and promoting transformation. He highlighted the importance of events like this in fostering a sense of unity and pride among South Africans, embodying the spirit of ubuntu.

Renowned artist Lebani Sirenje, popularly known as Rasta, also joined the celebration to congratulate the Proteas on their success. Despite some players being hesitant to dance on stage, skipper Temba Bavuma expressed gratitude for the fans’ support and acknowledged the impact of their victory on the nation.

The World Test Championship title adds to South Africa’s recent success in the sporting arena, with the country excelling across various disciplines. The Proteas’ achievement ends a trophy drought and follows strong performances in other cricketing events, including reaching the final of the T20 World Cup.

In addition to cricket, South Africa has seen success in rugby, with the Springboks claiming a record fourth Rugby World Cup title. The country also showcased its prowess at the Olympic Games, earning medals in swimming, athletics, cycling, and rugby sevens. Individual athletes like Dricus du Plessis and Rayno Nel have also made their mark on the international stage, further solidifying South Africa’s reputation as a powerhouse in sports.
