Cristiano Ronaldo has finally shared his thoughts on the controversial Ballon d’Or ceremony that took place on October 28, 2024. The event saw Manchester City’s Rodri being crowned as the winner over Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior, sparking a debate among football fans and players alike.
Before the ceremony, there was much anticipation surrounding the potential winners, with Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham, Dani Carvajal, and Rodri all being considered as frontrunners for the prestigious award. Despite all four players having exceptional seasons and winning multiple trophies, it was widely believed that Vinicius Junior would be the one to take home the Ballon d’Or trophy.
However, to the surprise of many, Rodri was announced as the 2024 Men’s Ballon d’Or winner, a decision that divided opinions within the football community. Real Madrid, including Vinicius Junior, boycotted the event in protest, deeming the outcome unfair and disrespectful.
Joining the conversation two months after the ceremony, five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo expressed his belief that Vinicius Junior was the deserving recipient of the award. Speaking at the 2024 Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai, Ronaldo praised the Brazilian forward for his outstanding performances throughout the season.
Ronaldo stated, “I really love the way they do their career, Bellingham, Lamine [Yamal] now, this young generation, Vinicius, they do a fantastic job. In my opinion, he deserved to win the Golden Ball. It was unfair in my opinion, I say it here in front of everybody. They gave it to Rodri, he deserved it too but I think they should have given it to Vinicius because he won a Champions League… and scored in the final.”
Since the Ballon d’Or ceremony, Vinicius Junior has been recognized for his exceptional performances, winning the Best Men’s Player award at the FIFA Awards and being named the Best Men’s Player and Best Forward at the Globe Soccer Awards in Palm Jumeirah.
The controversy surrounding the 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremony continues to spark discussions among football fans and players, with many still divided on whether Rodri was the rightful winner or if Vinicius Junior was unfairly overlooked.
