The International Conference on Eritrea Studies kicked off today at the Asmara Palace Hotel with the theme “International and Regional Cooperation for Sustainable Development.” The event brought together a diverse group of attendees including Ministers, senior Government officials, Ambassadors, members of the diplomatic community, UN representatives, scholars, professionals, and invited guests.

Dr. Halima Mohammed, who chairs the conference’s coordinating committee, highlighted the increasing interest in researching and publishing on Eritrea. She stressed the importance of investing in research and education as a cornerstone of development efforts. The conference aims to facilitate academic exchange, encourage collaboration, and enhance understanding of Eritrea’s role in regional peace and stability, as well as its contributions to global sustainable development.

In his keynote address, Mr. Yemane Gebremeskel, the Minister of Information, expressed optimism about the research papers scheduled for discussion over the next three days. He emphasized that these papers, covering a wide range of topics, will greatly enrich development-focused academic research in the country. Additionally, Minister Yemane highlighted the conference’s potential to challenge and correct the negative narrative surrounding Eritrea that has been perpetuated by mainstream media and think tanks for nearly two decades.

The conference will feature the presentation of 154 research papers, spanning areas such as natural and social sciences, agriculture and natural resources, archaeology and national heritage, Diaspora opportunities and challenges, economic development, environment and climate change, language and linguistics, law, politics, and global issues, science and technology, as well as folklores and music. Of these papers, 70 will be presented by Eritrean experts from both within the country and abroad.
