India and Nigeria Bid to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games

By Francis Ofori

Accra, Sept 02, GNA-Commonwealth Sports, the governing body of the Commonwealth Games, has announced that Nigeria and India have officially submitted proposals to host the 2030 edition of the Games.

After a wave of diverse interest, the bidding process closed on August 31, 2025, with India and Nigeria stepping up to potentially host the prestigious event.

India and Nigeria in the Running

India, having previously hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2010, is back in the bidding process while Nigeria is looking to make history by becoming the first West African country to host the Games.

Dr. Donald Rukare, President of Commonwealth Sports, expressed his excitement at the proposals put forth by these two powerhouse nations. He commended their ambition and commitment to sports development.

He also thanked the Commonwealth Games Associations of India and Nigeria for their dynamic engagement in the bidding process, praising their national sports policies and the potential legacy benefits for local communities.

2030 Evaluation Commission

The 2030 Evaluation Commission now has the task of reviewing and evaluating the proposals to recommend a host to the Executive Board.

Madam Katie Sadleir, Commonwealth Sport CEO, highlighted the progress made in securing hosts for future events, including Glasgow for the 2026 Commonwealth Games and Malta for the 2027 Commonwealth Youth Games.

She emphasized the importance of member countries’ participation in the bidding process and commended Glasgow and Scotland for their collaborative approach, inspiring new countries to consider hosting the Games in the future.
