Former Springboks Julian Redelinghuys and Steven Kitshoff both suffered similar career-ending neck injuries, forcing them to retire from rugby prematurely. Redelinghuys, who is now the Lions scrum coach, expressed his sadness that Kitshoff would not be able to achieve his goal of becoming an international centurion due to his injury.

Kitshoff sustained the career-ending injury during a Currie Cup game for Western Province against Griquas last year. Despite undergoing neck fusion surgery in an attempt to save his career, the 33-year-old was left with limited neck rotation and was advised by a specialist neurosurgeon to retire from rugby to avoid the risk of reinjury.

Ironically, Redelinghuys suffered a similar fate at the age of 27 when he fractured his neck during a Currie Cup semifinal for the Lions against the Cheetahs in 2016. This injury also led to his premature retirement from rugby based on medical advice. Redelinghuys, who had eight Springbok caps to his name, acknowledged the similarities between their situations and had a conversation with Kitshoff following his injury.

Reflecting on Kitshoff’s career, Redelinghuys praised his contributions to the Springbok team, particularly his role in their success at the World Cups and the team’s overall development. Despite not being able to achieve all of his goals in rugby, Redelinghuys commended Kitshoff for his dedication and wished him well in his post-rugby life.

Redelinghuys fondly recalled the time he shared with Kitshoff on the field, particularly their Bok debut together against Ireland in 2016. He admired Kitshoff’s work ethic and versatility as a loosehead prop, noting his exceptional skills in both set-piece play and open-field situations. Redelinghuys highlighted Kitshoff’s defensive prowess, ball-stealing ability, and overall dynamism on the field, making him a formidable opponent.

In conclusion, Redelinghuys expressed his admiration for Kitshoff’s career and his resilience in the face of adversity. He emphasized the support of Kitshoff’s partner, Aimee, and looked forward to seeing Kitshoff excel in his future endeavors beyond rugby. The bond between the two former players and their shared experiences in the rugby world serve as a testament to their enduring friendship and mutual respect.
