HP Launches ‘HP Gaming Garage’ Initiative to Address Youth Unemployment in South Africa

South Africa is grappling with the pressing challenges of youth unemployment, inequality, and poverty. In response to these issues, HP has introduced the ‘HP Gaming Garage’ initiative. This program is aimed at empowering young South Africans by equipping them with skills and opportunities in the growing gaming industry.

Youth unemployment remains a major concern in South Africa, with staggering statistics indicating a significant gap in employment opportunities for young individuals. The unemployment rate among individuals aged 15-34 stands at 45.5%, well above the national average of 32.9%. The situation is even more dire for youths aged 15-24, with an unemployment rate soaring to 60.8%. These figures underscore the urgent need for targeted initiatives to support the youth in securing sustainable employment opportunities.

The ‘HP Gaming Garage’ initiative is designed to tackle these challenges by providing young people with valuable skills in game development and esports management. Through a partnership with EDx, the program offers a free Professional Certificate, enabling participants to acquire competencies that are highly sought after in the global digital economy. By focusing on higher education students and aspiring game developers, the initiative aims to foster creativity and innovation within the gaming industry.

Yesh Surjoodeen, HP’s Managing Director for Southern and Central Africa, emphasizes the importance of participants infusing their games with South African heritage, blending culture, storytelling, and technology. This approach not only showcases the country’s rich diversity but also enables young individuals to make their mark in the gaming industry.

HP’s commitment to using technology for social impact is evident in its various global initiatives. The ‘HP Gaming Garage’ in South Africa is a reflection of this commitment, as it seeks to create pathways for youth to access meaningful employment opportunities within the tech sector. By investing in the potential of young South Africans, HP is not only addressing immediate socio-economic challenges but also contributing to the long-term development of a more inclusive and innovative economy.

The ‘HP Gaming Garage’ initiative represents a progressive step towards empowering the nation’s youth and bridging the digital divide. Through this program, HP is not only equipping young individuals with valuable skills but also fostering a culture of creativity and innovation within the gaming industry. It is a testament to HP’s dedication to making a positive impact on society through technology-driven initiatives.
