Buying a new phone can be an exciting experience, especially when you’re looking for a replacement in a hurry. However, it’s essential to be cautious, especially when purchasing from unofficial distributors or online platforms like eBay. In a recent incident, a family found themselves in a predicament after buying a brand-new iPhone 14 from eBay, only to discover that the phone had no service and was ultimately blacklisted.

The story began when a 16-year-old accidentally dropped a weight on his iPhone XR, prompting the family to search for a replacement while visiting family in Ireland. After finding a seemingly good deal on eBay for a brand-new, carrier-unlocked iPhone 14, they made the purchase. The phone arrived promptly and initially seemed fine, but issues started to arise once the SIM was inserted and the phone was set up.

Troubles with accessing the Apple ID, WhatsApp not working, and the phone showing no service led the family to contact the mobile operator, Three. After receiving a new SIM card and troubleshooting steps failed to resolve the issue, they realized that the phone was likely blacklisted. Checking the IMEI number confirmed their suspicions, and they learned the harsh reality of buying a potentially stolen phone.

Blacklisting occurs when a carrier blocks a phone from connecting to the network, usually due to non-payment or being reported stolen. Unfortunately, there’s little that can be done if a phone is blacklisted, as only the carrier can remove the block. In this case, the family was fortunate to receive a full refund from the seller, who was also a victim of the original fraudster.

To avoid falling victim to scams when buying a new phone online, it’s essential to perform an IMEI check, check the seller’s feedback and reviews, and consider purchasing from official and reputable distributors. Rushing a purchasing decision can lead to costly mistakes, so it’s crucial to take the time to research and ensure a safe and secure transaction.

In conclusion, the family’s experience serves as a cautionary tale about the risks of buying phones from unofficial sources. By following proper precautions and being vigilant, you can avoid falling prey to scammers and ensure a smooth and hassle-free phone-buying experience.
