Barcelona is rumored to be in talks with Thomas Partey for a potential free transfer, as manager Hansi Flick is reportedly interested in bringing the Arsenal midfielder to the Nou Camp. The Spanish giants are looking to make a smart move by targeting the Ghanaian international, whose contract at Emirates will expire at the end of June without a new deal in place.

Despite Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressing his desire to keep the 31-year-old midfielder, negotiations between the club and Partey’s representatives have been progressing slowly. This has created an opportunity for other clubs to make their move, with Atletico Madrid also reportedly monitoring their former player as they aim to bolster their midfield without spending a hefty sum.

Barcelona had previously ruled out signing Partey in March, but sources suggest that Flick is a big admirer of the midfielder and sees him as a cost-effective solution to their midfield requirements. Partey, who joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid for £45 million in 2020, has been plagued by injuries during his time in London but remains a key player when fit.

The midfielder played a crucial role last season, featuring in 35 league matches as Arsenal mounted a challenge against Liverpool for the title. While Partey would prefer to stay in London, where he has developed a strong relationship with Arteta and settled his family after welcoming a new baby, he is seeking a contract that reflects his value at the club and avoids a significant wage cut, especially as he nears his 32nd birthday.

Barcelona’s financial constraints make a free transfer an appealing option, although they face competition from Saudi clubs who have also shown interest in Partey. Should Partey depart, Arsenal is reportedly prepared to make a move for Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, with reports suggesting a £51 million deal could be finalized swiftly.

The ongoing negotiations between Barcelona and Partey highlight the complexities of modern football transfers, where clubs must balance financial constraints with the need to strengthen their squads. As the transfer window progresses, it remains to be seen where Partey will ultimately end up and how his departure could impact both Arsenal and Barcelona’s midfield options.
