ANC treasurer general Gwen Ramokgopa has emphasized the importance of focusing on the 2026 local government elections rather than engaging in debates about presidential succession within the party.
Ramokgopa, speaking at the Progressive Business Forum in Hyde Park, expressed her commitment to prioritizing discussions on the upcoming elections and working towards unity within the ANC.
She stated, “I would really appreciate it if I didn’t get into the presidential succession debate. We have a very big challenge, which is the 2026 elections, that we must face together, united.”
While her name has been mentioned as a potential successor to Cyril Ramaphosa, Ramokgopa highlighted that her focus is on making a difference within the ANC and society without necessarily seeking higher office.
Addressing the need for untainted leadership, insiders have suggested that Ramokgopa’s clean record could benefit the party in its efforts to renew itself amidst declining support.
The ANC is also considering other potential candidates for the presidency, including Paul Mashatile and Senzo Mchunu, despite corruption allegations against them.
Furthermore, the ANC Women’s League has indicated its search for a female leader, fueling speculation about the possibility of a female president at the 2027 elective conference.
In her remarks, Ramokgopa acknowledged the challenges women face in attaining leadership positions within the ANC, particularly at the provincial and regional levels.
She highlighted the party’s efforts to promote gender balance in ministerial appointments and the importance of competence in leadership roles.
As discussions on presidential succession continue within the ANC, Ramokgopa reiterated the significance of focusing on the upcoming elections and working towards a unified approach to governance.
