Former U.S. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, a champion for gun control legislation, passed away at the age of 81. McCarthy rose to prominence in 1996 following a tragic mass shooting on a New York commuter train that claimed the life of her husband and left her son severely injured. Her untiring advocacy for stricter gun laws made her a prominent figure in the fight against gun violence, despite facing challenges from pro-gun groups like the National Rifle Association.

In June 2013, McCarthy disclosed that she was battling lung cancer, eventually leading to her retirement in January 2014. Her son, Kevin McCarthy, who survived the train shooting, praised her relentless dedication to public service and her unwavering commitment to making a positive impact on society. Governor Kathy Hochul of New York ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of the late congresswoman, recognizing her as a formidable advocate for gun control.

Fellow lawmakers, such as U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi, mourned the loss of McCarthy, describing her as a fierce leader and a driving force behind gun violence prevention efforts. McCarthy’s influence extended beyond Capitol Hill, as she became a frequent guest on national news programs to discuss gun-related tragedies like the shootings at Columbine High School and Sandy Hook Elementary School.

McCarthy’s emotional plea for stricter gun regulations during a late-night House floor debate in 1999 underscored her personal connection to the issue. Her impassioned advocacy was fueled by the promise she made to her son and late husband to prevent other families from experiencing the same pain and loss she endured.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, McCarthy’s transformation from a nurse to a prominent political figure was spurred by the tragic events of December 7, 1993, when a gunman opened fire on a New York-bound train. Her subsequent victory in the 1996 congressional race, which inspired a TV movie produced by Barbra Streisand, solidified her position as a respected lawmaker in a predominantly Republican district.

While critics labeled McCarthy as a one-issue politician, she emphasized her broader interests in healthcare and education. However, she acknowledged that her legacy would primarily be tied to her advocacy for gun control. McCarthy’s impactful career serves as a testament to her unwavering dedication to creating a safer, more secure society for future generations.
