Delta State Governor Affirms Commitment to Sports as Unity Torch Arrives

The Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed his unwavering commitment to sports as a vital instrument for youth empowerment, social inclusion, and community development. This affirmation comes as the torch of the 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival, tagged Ogun 2024, arrives in Delta State.

Receiving the Unity torch at the Government House in Asaba, Governor Oborevwori, represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, highlighted the alignment of the National Sports Festival’s values with his administration’s MORE Agenda. He emphasized that the festival builds hope for progress, prosperity, and unity across all sectors.

Delta State has a rich history of sporting excellence in Nigeria and has proudly hosted and triumphed in the last edition of the games in 2022. Governor Oborevwori commended the state for nurturing some of the finest athletes who have brought pride to both Delta and the nation in local and international events.

The Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Alhaji Shehu Dikko, represented by Mrs. Ikana Mbora, conveyed the purpose of the Unity Torch’s visit to Delta State. It serves as an invitation to Team Delta for the upcoming games in Abeokuta and a call for fair competition among athletes.

Mallam Dikko reiterated the commission’s commitment to organizing a memorable event that provides a platform for Nigerian athletes to excel in their respective sports. The Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Mr. Onoriode Oborevwori, expressed gratitude for the governor’s support and assured that the state’s contingent would compete fiercely to retain their crown.

Team Delta has a remarkable track record, having won 8 out of the last 10 editions of the National Sports Festival since Bauchi 2000. With the state government’s continued investment in sports and welfare of the athletes, Governor Oborevwori’s only expectation is for the team to return as successful defending champions.
