Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in India: Recently, India saw a rise in cases of the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), with two new cases reported among children in Maharashtra’s Nagpur. A private lab confirmed the presence of HMPV in these cases, and samples have been sent to AIIMS virology for further analysis. Fortunately, both patients have recovered and been discharged from the hospital.
Just a day before, India had reported five cases of HMPV, including the first two cases in Karnataka’s Bengaluru. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) stated that HMPV is already circulating globally, including in India. Despite this, there has been no significant increase in Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) cases in the country, according to data from ICMR and the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP). The Union Health Ministry and ICMR are closely monitoring the situation.
Latest Developments on HMPV:
1. Two new cases of HMPV reported in Nagpur, Maharashtra.
2. Samples sent to AIIMS virology for analysis.
3. Patients have recovered and been discharged.
4. Five HMPV cases reported in India, including the first cases in Bengaluru.
5. ICMR confirms global circulation of HMPV.
6. No unusual surge in ILI or SARI cases in India.
As the situation continues to evolve, it is essential to stay informed and follow guidelines from health authorities to prevent the spread of HMPV in India.
