The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, has disclosed that the value of excavators imported into Ghana amounts to an astonishing GH¢6.2 billion, ranking them among the top three highest imports in the country. This revelation was made during an appearance on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, March 22, where Mr. Kofi Buah underscored the urgent need for enhanced regulation and oversight of excavator usage, particularly in the mining and construction sectors.
In order to combat illegal mining activities and ensure that excavators are utilized for legitimate purposes, the Minister emphasized the necessity of tracking every excavator entering the country, validating its intended use, and maintaining real-time monitoring of its whereabouts 24/7. This new initiative is geared towards promoting transparency and accountability in the importation, registration, and operation of excavators.
Collaborating closely with the Minerals Commission, as well as engaging other government agencies such as the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources is actively working to enhance the management and monitoring of excavators. Mr. Kofi Buah highlighted the importance of involving various agencies in this effort, starting from the port and extending throughout the entire process.
Proposals are currently being reviewed to establish an efficient tracking system that incorporates digital monitoring mechanisms and fosters inter-agency cooperation. The ultimate goal is to ensure that every imported excavator serves a legitimate purpose and is traceable at all times. By implementing stringent measures and fostering collaboration among relevant stakeholders, the Ministry aims to curb illegal activities and promote responsible excavator usage in Ghana.
