GH¢12.9 bn recovery: PAC Chair Abena Osei-Asare defends committee's impact

Abena Osei-Asare, the Chairperson of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), recently spoke out in defense of the committee’s effectiveness and the vital work carried out by the Audit Service. In an interview on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show (SMS) on Monday, June 7, 2025, Mrs. Osei-Asare addressed concerns regarding the impact of the PAC and highlighted the tangible results achieved through their collaboration with the Audit Service.

Despite skepticism from the public, Mrs. Osei-Asare provided concrete evidence to support the importance of the PAC’s work. She emphasized that the committee, in conjunction with the Audit Service, has successfully recovered a substantial amount of GH¢12.9 billion in public funds. This significant sum not only demonstrates the effectiveness of their oversight function but also underscores the critical role they play in safeguarding the nation’s finances.

Mrs. Osei-Asare acknowledged the ongoing scrutiny surrounding the PAC’s ability to enforce recommendations and address audit infractions. However, she reaffirmed her commitment to serving the national interest above all else. Emphasizing the need to protect the public purse, she stressed the importance of efficient and effective management of taxpayer money, regardless of the government in power.

While celebrating the recoveries made thus far, Mrs. Osei-Asare highlighted the importance of preventing financial malpractices in the future. She called for the strengthening of key institutions, particularly audit agencies, to enhance public financial management. To achieve this, she advocated for granting the audit service greater autonomy and providing them with adequate resources to effectively scrutinize ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) and prevent financial irregularities.

In conclusion, Mrs. Osei-Asare’s remarks underscore the critical role played by the PAC and the Audit Service in safeguarding public funds. Their collaborative efforts have not only led to significant financial recoveries but also serve as a deterrent against future infractions. By prioritizing the efficient management of taxpayer money and advocating for stronger institutional frameworks, Mrs. Osei-Asare is committed to upholding the highest standards of accountability and transparency in Ghana’s financial sector.
