GE Appliances, a company owned by the Chinese multinational home appliance and consumer electronics manufacturer Haier Group Corp., recently announced a substantial investment of $490 million to expand its washer and dryer manufacturing plant in Kentucky. This move signifies a shift in production back to the United States from China, highlighting a commitment to reshoring manufacturing operations.

The investment, which will take place at the GE Appliance plant in Louisville, Kentucky, the company’s global headquarters and largest manufacturing site, aims to establish the most advanced manufacturing plant for producing clothes washers. This expansion will create 800 new, full-time jobs and strengthen Kentucky’s position as a global hub for advanced appliance manufacturing.

With the support of incentives from the State of Kentucky, GE Appliances aims to position the plant as the largest American washer manufacturer. This investment builds on a decade-long commitment to the United States following Haier’s acquisition of the company in 2016. The decision to bring laundry production to the United States aligns with the company’s ‘zero-distance’ business strategy, aiming to produce appliances as close as possible to customers and consumers.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear praised the new investment, emphasizing the state’s reputation as a destination for advanced manufacturing and job creation. This reshoring initiative comes at a crucial time, just before President Donald Trump’s 90-day deadline for U.S. trade partners to reach agreements on reciprocal tariffs.

The new investment will see the production of more than 15 models of front-load washers in a redesigned facility at Appliance Park in Louisville. The plant will showcase the latest in automation, robotics, and material-handling technologies, further enhancing production capabilities. The reshored manufacturing lines are expected to open in 2027, demonstrating a commitment to innovation and efficiency.

In addition to GE Appliances’ investment, the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority has approved incentives to support the project, including workforce training grants and building modernization. The half-billion-dollar investment is expected to generate 800 local jobs and secure the company’s growth in Louisville for years to come.

The decision to reshore manufacturing operations underscores GE Appliances’ dedication to producing high-quality appliances in the United States. By investing in advanced manufacturing technologies and creating jobs locally, the company is poised to strengthen its position in the industry and continue to deliver innovative solutions for American households.
