The Pilanesberg region in South Africa has long been known as a premier safari destination, attracting visitors from all over the world eager to witness the big five and immerse themselves in the beauty of the bush. However, a new wave of tourism is emerging in the area, one that focuses on showcasing local culture, history, and community at the forefront of the visitor experience.

Kgosi Nyala Pilane, the leader of the Bakgatla ba Kgafela tribe, recognizes the importance of expanding the tourism offerings in the region. While safaris will always be a significant attraction, he believes that visitors are now seeking a deeper connection with the people and the land they are exploring. This shift has led to the establishment of two new museums in the community, one dedicated to the tribe’s history and traditional leadership, and the other highlighting Bakgatla customs, including food, cultural practices, and daily life. Heritage tours now take visitors from nearby lodges and resorts to these museums, providing them with a more immersive and educational experience.

The community’s heritage initiative is part of a larger plan to create a more inclusive tourism economy that directly involves the local population. The goal is to increase participation in the tourism industry among the Bakgatla people, offering opportunities for employment as guides, storytellers, cooks, crafters, and more. By bridging the gap between local knowledge and visitor expectations, the community aims to enhance the overall tourism experience in the region.

Looking ahead, Pilane envisions the cultural aspect of tourism standing alongside the traditional safari industry, offering visitors a more comprehensive and enriching experience. Plans are underway to collaborate with the government to improve road infrastructure and enhance safety measures to support the growth of tourism in the area. The community is committed to ensuring that tourists feel welcomed and safe when visiting their villages, with locals playing a key role in maintaining a positive and secure environment.

Beyond economic benefits, Pilane emphasizes that the expansion of tourism is also about reclaiming pride in the community’s heritage. By putting their stories, customs, and knowledge at the forefront of the tourism experience, the Bakgatla ba Kgafela are demonstrating the value of their cultural heritage to visitors. As tourism continues to flourish in the Pilanesberg region, the community is dedicated to ensuring that visitors depart not only with photographs but also with a deeper understanding of the rich history and traditions of the area.
