Several French institutions were buyers at the sale, which took place over eight hours. A historic event unfolded in Paris as a watch worn by French wartime hero and president Charles de Gaulle was auctioned off for a staggering amount exceeding half a million euros (€537,920). This exceptional sale, conducted by the renowned auction house Artcurial, set a new worldwide record for a watch by the esteemed French brand LIP, which has a legacy dating back 150 years.

The significance of this timepiece lies not only in its association with the iconic figure of Charles de Gaulle but also in the ongoing production of the “General de Gaulle” watch by LIP, a tribute to the statesman’s enduring influence on French history. The auction, which took place on the evening of 16th December, showcased a collection of de Gaulle’s personal items, including letters, a book manuscript, and even a school report, culminating in a total of €5.6 million raised.

Among the buyers at the auction were various French institutions such as the French National Library and the National Archives, highlighting the cultural and historical significance of de Gaulle’s legacy. The sale was orchestrated by de Gaulle’s descendants, who inherited a treasure trove of personal belongings from his son, Philippe, who passed away at the age of 102 in March. The event spanned over eight hours, attracting a diverse range of bidders and enthusiasts keen to own a piece of de Gaulle’s history.

Charles de Gaulle’s pivotal role in leading the resistance against Nazi occupation during World War II and his subsequent leadership as France’s post-war statesman and president have solidified his place as one of the country’s most revered figures. His contributions to shaping modern France, including the drafting of the current constitution, continue to resonate in the nation’s collective memory.
