Former deputy president David Mabuza, fondly known as “The Cat”, has passed away, as announced by ANC secretary general Fikile Mbalula on Thursday. The cause of his death has not been disclosed at this time.
Mabuza, who held the position of deputy president of South Africa from February 2018 to February 2023, dedicated his life to serving the people of the country. He played a significant role in the struggle against apartheid and later went on to lead as the premier of Mpumalanga before assuming the role of deputy president.
Described as a committed cadre who embodied the values of unity, discipline, and transformation, Mabuza leaves behind a legacy of service and leadership. Mbalula extended heartfelt condolences on behalf of the African National Congress to Mabuza’s family, friends, comrades, and the nation as a whole.
A patriot, freedom fighter, and humble leader, Mabuza will be remembered for his contribution to a united, non-racial, non-sexist, democratic, and prosperous South Africa. His passing marks a loss for the country, but his legacy will continue to inspire the ongoing work of nation-building.
