Footballer Lucas Akins has been sentenced to 14 months in prison for causing the death of cyclist Adrian Daniel through careless driving. The tragic incident took place in March 2022 in Huddersfield, and Daniel passed away ten days after being hit by Akins’ Mercedes.
During the sentencing at Leeds Crown Court, Judge Alex Menary addressed Akins, stating, “It is plain to me you are someone who is highly unlikely to trouble the courts again. There is strong personal mitigation here. However, it seems to be the appropriate punishment can only be achieved by immediate custody.” Akins, 36, will serve half of his sentence in custody before being released on licence. Additionally, he has been banned from driving for one year.
Despite admitting to the offence on 4 March, Akins has continued to play for Mansfield Town in League One this season. He joined the club in 2021 after playing two seasons with Burton Albion in the EFL Championship. Throughout his career, Akins has participated in over 600 games and earned seven caps for Grenada, with his last international appearance in March.
During the court proceedings, prosecutor Carmel Pearson KC detailed the moment of the crash, stating, “The defendant on the footage, albeit driving slowly, pulled out at the give way junction and struck Adrian Daniel. It was too late for Adrian Daniel to brake, and he suffered a catastrophic head injury.”
Adrian Daniel’s wife, Savannah, shared a heart-wrenching statement about her husband and the immense pain his loss has caused their family. Akins’ barrister, Tim Pole KC, expressed that the footballer is deeply remorseful and will carry the weight of the incident for the rest of his life.
The tragic outcome serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of careless driving and the importance of road safety for all individuals. As Akins serves his sentence and reflects on the impact of his actions, the memory of Adrian Daniel will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
