First Lady Lordina Mahama launched the 65th anniversary of Ghana Senior High School (GHANASCO) in Tamale, highlighting the school’s legacy of excellence and its role in shaping future generations. As an alumna of the school, she praised President John Mahama’s commitment to education and the transformative power of learning.
GHANASCO, according to the First Lady, is not just a school but a community, a heritage, and a training ground for leaders, professionals, artisans, and patriots. She commended the school’s 65-year dedication to nurturing well-rounded young Ghanaians.
During her speech, Mrs. Mahama recognized the achievements of several prominent GHANASCO alumni, including former Managing Director of Stanbic Bank Ghana Alhassan Andani, former Minister for Business Development Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Awal, Minister for Energy and Green Transition John Jinapor, Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways Alhassan Suhuyini, legendary footballers Abedi Pele and Kwame Ayew, and Vice Chancellor of Tamale Technical University Professor Bashiru Imoro Saeed.
The First Lady also highlighted the connection between the school and national leadership, attributing President John Mahama’s effective leadership to his education at GHANASCO. She mentioned that his time at the school laid the foundation for his leadership and commitment to transforming education for every child.
In addition to celebrating GHANASCO’s achievements, the First Lady reiterated the government’s commitment to education. She emphasized initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, enhancing teacher training, prioritizing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), and implementing further measures to enhance teaching and learning.
Professor Saeed, the Vice Chancellor of Tamale Technical University, emphasized GHANASCO’s founding mission to cultivate future leaders, citing the successes of both President and Mrs. Mahama as examples.
The Headmaster, Mr. Douglas Haruna Yakubu, reflected on the school’s evolution and urged students to emulate the successes of their alumni while avoiding negative behaviors like vandalism and drug abuse. He also appealed to the government for assistance in providing essential facilities such as a library, assembly hall, dormitory, and improved sanitation.
The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, assured the school of the government’s support, announcing tenders for the construction of an assembly hall and dormitory. He also pledged to address the shortage of classroom furniture and empower school authorities to maintain discipline among students.
The Minister further announced plans to review the basic school curriculum to strengthen the use of native languages as the foundation for learning. The 65th anniversary of GHANASCO will be commemorated in October this year.
The event was well attended by dignitaries, including the Northern Regional Minister Ali Adolf John, Mayor of Tamale Abu Takoro, and Regional Educational Director Alhassan Alidu Jnr.
