The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved the first medication for obstructive sleep apnea, a condition that affects millions of people, especially those who are overweight or obese. The medication, called Zepbound (tirzepatide), is manufactured by Eli Lilly and is intended to be used in conjunction with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

Sleep apnea occurs when the upper airway becomes blocked during sleep, leading to pauses in breathing. Zepbound works by activating receptors of hormones secreted from the intestine to reduce appetite and food intake, similar to other medications like Ozempic and Wegovy. Studies have shown that by helping to reduce body weight, Zepbound can also improve symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea.

In a 52-week study, participants treated with Zepbound experienced a significant reduction in events of apnea or hypopnea, with many achieving remission of symptoms. However, the medication does come with potential side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, and stomach discomfort. It is also important to note that Zepbound may cause thyroid C-cell tumors in rats, although it is unknown if this risk extends to humans.

Dr. Wendy Troxel, a sleep expert, praised the FDA’s approval of Zepbound as a promising advancement for those suffering from sleep apnea. She noted that while positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy is effective, many patients struggle with adherence. Zepbound offers an alternative treatment option, particularly for obese individuals with moderate to severe sleep apnea.

Dr. William Lu, medical director of Dreem Health, highlighted the significance of Zepbound in addressing the interconnected issues of obesity and sleep apnea. He emphasized the importance of getting tested for sleep apnea and making lifestyle changes to improve overall health.

In conclusion, the approval of Zepbound by the FDA represents a significant milestone in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. This new medication offers hope for those struggling with the condition and provides a valuable treatment option for improving sleep quality and overall health.
