Navigating a career while battling a chronic illness like Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) can be a daunting task. The challenges of managing symptoms such as pain episodes, fatigue, and increased risk of infection can make it difficult to maintain a consistent work schedule and handle high-pressure tasks. Hospitalizations are frequent, with patients often requiring multiple visits for pain crises and other complications.

For individuals like Aaron, who are living with SCD, pursuing their dream job can seem like an uphill battle. The energy required to simply survive can make it hard to make long-term career plans or have expectations about how things will go. Despite trying out a marketing gig, Aaron has decided to put his career plans on hold for now, especially after losing a loved one to the same disease. Adulthood brings enough pressure to be self-reliant and make something of your life, but when your body is focused on survival, it can be a constant struggle.

In other news, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has released new guidelines for 2025, focusing on electronic payments, digital currency frameworks, and contactless payments. With the global shift towards digital financial ecosystems, the CBN is enhancing its focus on open banking to drive innovation and financial inclusion. The guidelines now provide clearer operational frameworks for merchants, individuals, and fintech companies to integrate the eNaira, the country’s Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), into their payment systems.

The CBN is also pushing for the adoption of contactless payments to meet the growing demand for fast, safe, and hygienic payment methods, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. The guidelines include card technology upgrades for banks and retailers to support Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. Additionally, the CBN has updated its Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Counter-Terrorist Financing (CTF) policies to mandate stricter Know Your Customer (KYC) protocols for digital banking licenses.

Meanwhile, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has initiated investigations into consumer complaints against prominent Nigerian companies, including GTBank, MTN Nigeria, and Air Peace Airline. GTBank faced network disruptions during a migration to a new core banking system, leading to customer complaints. MTN Nigeria customers reported issues with undelivered data services and unexplained data depletion, while Air Peace is under scrutiny for alleged exploitative ticket pricing.

The FCCPC inquiries are scheduled to commence in December to address consumer grievances, enforce compliance with regulatory standards, and ensure market fairness. These investigations are grounded in the Federal Competition and Consumer Act of 2018, empowering the commission to investigate practices that undermine consumer rights and create unfair competition.

In case you missed it, Chinese eCommerce company, Temu, has become the most popular Android and iPhone app in Nigeria, while Bitmama has paused virtual MasterCard services due to issues with the card provider. Opportunities to join Opeyemi Olugbemiro at Pitch Friday, apply for vacancies at Flutterwave, or explore roles at Moniepoint are also available.

That’s all for today. Have a great day!
