The Catholic community worldwide mourns the passing of His Holiness, Pope Francis, who passed away on Easter Monday, 21 April 2025. The official announcement was made by the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria on behalf of the President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, Most Rev. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji. Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in 1936, was known for his humility, courage, and deep love for the poor and marginalized.
Elected on 13 March 2013, Pope Francis’ pontificate was characterized by a strong emphasis on mercy, justice, and care for creation. He was a passionate advocate for migrants and refugees, promoted a more synodal Church rooted in listening and shared responsibility, and called for a culture of kindness and human fraternity. His efforts in advancing interreligious dialogue fostered peace and mutual understanding among people of different faiths.
During this period of mourning, bishops are encouraged to organize Diocesan Eucharistic Celebrations for the repose of Pope Francis’ soul. Catholics are also requested to pray for the same intention during the Divine Mercy devotion at 3:00 O’clock. It is noted that during the interregnum, the part on the Pope at the Eucharistic Prayer is omitted, emphasizing the need for unity and prayer during this time.
May the soul of Pope Francis and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace through the mercy of God. The Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria has provided contact information for their head office in Abuja and Lagos, as well as their website for further inquiries. The legacy of Pope Francis will continue to inspire Catholics around the world to embody the values of mercy, justice, and love for all.
