Macron Urges Europe to Remain Vigilant Against US Trade Threats

French President Emmanuel Macron has issued a stark warning to European leaders following the recent reduction in US tariffs on goods from the European Union. Macron characterized the move as a “fragile pause” and emphasized the need for Europe to utilize “all available levers” in order to safeguard its economic interests.

Reacting to US President Donald Trump’s unexpected decision to halt further tariff increases on EU imports for a 90-day period, Macron took to social media to express his concerns. The reduction in tariffs brought the rate for EU goods down to 10%, a significant decrease from the initial 20% levy imposed by Trump as part of his broader trade policies.

Describing the current situation as a “fragile truce,” Macron called for unity within the European Commission to demonstrate strength and preparedness in the face of potential threats. He stressed the importance of Europe continuing to explore and implement necessary countermeasures to protect its economic well-being.

While Trump’s initial tariff announcements had sent shockwaves through global markets, his decision to partially reverse course has provided some relief to affected economies. The EU, along with countries like Japan, now faces a standard 10% tariff rate, in contrast to China which remains subject to higher tariffs.

Despite the European Commission’s preference for a negotiated resolution rather than retaliatory measures, preparations are being made for a potential response in case the tariff freeze is lifted at the end of the 90-day period. Macron highlighted the need for vigilance against redirected trade flows from non-EU countries, which could disrupt the European market and harm local industries.

Emphasizing the Commission’s objective of negotiating the removal of unjust tariffs and securing a fair agreement without imbalances, Macron acknowledged the uncertainty that lies ahead for businesses on both sides of the Atlantic. He concluded by reaffirming the importance of standing firm in defense of jobs and the livelihoods of citizens.
