Banyana Banyana coach Dr Desiree Ellis has recently announced the squad for the upcoming friendly internationals against Malawi in April 2025. The matches, scheduled for 5 and 8 April in Johannesburg, are crucial in the team’s preparations for the defense of their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title. The tournament is set to take place in Morocco from 5-26 July 2025.

After a successful training camp in Johannesburg, where a young Banyana Banyana team secured victories against Lesotho, Coach Ellis has opted to bring back the core group that represented South Africa in Jamaica in November 2024. Notable additions to the squad include goalkeeper Casey Gordon from JVW FC, earning her first senior call-up after impressing in a specialized goalkeeper camp. Veteran Mpumi Nyandeni, aged 37, has also made a return to the national team setup. Additionally, US-based defender Shakira O’Malley and TP Mazembe forward Kgaelebane Mohlakoana have been recalled after their previous appearances.

However, the team will be missing some key players due to injuries, including Bambanani Mbane, Karabo Dhlamini, and Wendy Shongwe. Former captain Refiloe Jane is also unavailable as she continues her recovery while playing for TS Galaxy Queens in the Hollywoodbets Super League. Coach Ellis emphasized the importance of these upcoming fixtures in shaping the squad for the WAFCON tournament later this year.

The friendly matches against Malawi will provide an opportunity for the team to fine-tune their strategies and evaluate the players ahead of the prestigious continental competition. With a mix of experienced players and promising newcomers, Banyana Banyana aims to showcase their strength and unity on the field. Fans can expect an exciting display of women’s football as South Africa prepares to defend their WAFCON title in Morocco.
