The Electoral Commission (EC) has made a significant decision regarding the votes cast for the late Madam Akua Donkor during the 2024 Presidential Election. According to the EC, all votes in favor of Madam Akua Donkor will be considered as Rejected Ballots due to her unfortunate demise. This ruling comes as a result of her image and party logo being included on the presidential ballot paper despite her passing.
In a statement released by the Deputy Chairman of Operations, Samuel Tettey, the EC clarified that votes for Madam Akua Donkor will not be added to the Valid Votes Cast. The Commission has informed its staff, both permanent and temporary, as well as agents of the presidential candidates, about this directive.
Moreover, the EC emphasized the legal implications of voting for a deceased candidate. According to Section 32(b) of PNDC Law 284, voting for a deceased candidate constitutes the offense of personation. The EC warned that individuals found guilty of this offense could face penalties such as a fine not exceeding 500 penalty units (₵6,000), imprisonment for up to two years, or both a fine and imprisonment. Additionally, convicted persons will be disqualified from registering as voters or participating in any public election for five years following the end of their imprisonment term.
The EC has called for public awareness regarding these legal implications and has urged the media to educate voters to prevent any misunderstandings. The Commission emphasized that voting for a dead person is a serious offense and that the law must be upheld.
This directive from the Electoral Commission is aimed at ensuring transparency and upholding the integrity of the electoral process as Ghana prepares for the upcoming polls. It is crucial for all citizens to adhere to the laws and regulations governing elections to maintain the credibility of the democratic process.
The Electoral Commission’s decision serves as a reminder of the importance of following electoral laws and regulations to ensure a fair and transparent election process. Voters must be fully aware of the legal implications of their actions to prevent any violations and uphold the integrity of the electoral system.
