The City of Ekurhuleni is set to undergo a transition in leadership as long-serving city manager, Dr Imogen Mashazi, is being removed from her position upon reaching retirement age. The council has decided to hold interviews for a new city manager to take over the reins.
In a letter addressed to Mashazi, Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza stated that the council resolved to put her on leave from 29 May 2025 to 1 August 2025, when she officially retires in accordance with regulations. The council has mandated Mashazi to ensure an orderly and efficient transition during this period as per the Municipal Systems Act.
Despite Mashazi’s dedication and commitment to the city, the council did not approve her continued tenure, prompting the decision to appoint a new city manager. Mashazi had requested compensation for the remaining two years of her contract, but this request was denied by the council.
Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema praised Mashazi for her leadership, citing her role in achieving clean audits and awards for the municipality. Malema expressed regret at her departure and hoped that she would continue to offer her experience and wisdom to the city.
The council has approved the commencement of the recruitment process for a new city manager on a five-year fixed term. The interview panel will include Mayor Xhakaza, EFF provincial chair Nkululeko Dunga, and an independent member with relevant expertise. Dunga emphasized the importance of a smooth transition and continuity in administration beyond individual leaders.
The recruitment process will involve advertising the position, screening candidates, and selecting a suitable candidate to lead the City of Ekurhuleni. This transition period marks the end of Mashazi’s 36-year tenure with the city, highlighting the need for succession planning and ensuring the city’s continued progress under new leadership.
