Ghanaian Singer Efya Highlights Financial Disparity Between Ghanaian and Nigerian Musicians
Ghanaian artist Efya recently discussed the financial differences between Ghanaian and Nigerian musicians in an interview with Nana Romeo on Accra FM. She pointed out that Nigerian musicians often engage in extravagant public giveaways, a trend that is not as common among Ghanaian artists.
According to Efya, Nigerian singer Davido’s recent $5,000 gift to a Ghanaian fan for promoting his song “With You” sparked the discussion. While Ghanaian artists also show appreciation to their fans, they tend to do so in private. Efya mentioned that she has personally supported fans by paying school fees and offering gifts but has never given away such a substantial amount publicly.
“Most Ghanaian artistes do give their fans money, but they just don’t like to make it public. We don’t have as much money as the Nigerians to engage in such generous giveaways. Even though we stand shoulder to shoulder with Nigerian artistes in many areas, financially it’s simply not the same—I don’t mind admitting that.”
Efya attributed the financial gap to Nigerian artists being booked for larger shows globally, earning higher fees as a result. She emphasized the need for stronger industry collaboration and support in Ghana to enable local artists to reach wider audiences and increase their earnings.
“We don’t get paid the same way they do, because they are performing at much bigger events. That’s why we need to support each other more, so we can get on bigger platforms and start earning the kind of money that allows us to dash our fans $5,000.”
Efya’s candid remarks shed light on the financial challenges faced by Ghanaian musicians compared to their Nigerian counterparts. By advocating for unity and support within the industry, she hopes to bridge the gap and empower Ghanaian artists to achieve greater success.
