The newly reconstituted Governing Council of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) was recently inaugurated by the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu. The council, chaired by Akyamfo Asafo Boakye Agyemang Bonsu, is tasked with a significant mandate to prioritize Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education, as well as artificial intelligence.
In his address, the Minister emphasized the importance of shifting focus from humanities programs to STEM education, stating that these areas are crucial for Ghana’s development. He urged the council to stay focused on science, mathematics, and engineering, as they form the foundation for the country’s future.
With the support of the Chairman, the Minister called for a reduction in the expansion of humanities programs to address the mismatch between education and employability. The goal is to produce graduates who are well-equipped for the job market and contribute effectively to Ghana’s development.
The newly inaugurated council comprises 15 members, including the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson, and representatives from various sectors such as convocation, University Teachers Association, postgraduate and undergraduate students, Alumni Association, Teachers And Education Workers Union, Conference Of The Heads Of Assisted Secondary Schools, and the education commission. The council also includes three other members, with at least one woman represented.
It is clear that the focus of the council is on driving STEM education and preparing students for the demands of the job market. By prioritizing these areas, the council aims to shape Ghana’s human capital and contribute to the country’s development goals. The newly inaugurated Governing Council of KNUST has a crucial role to play in shaping the future of education and fostering innovation and growth in Ghana.
