Africa Fashion International (AFI) has officially launched its search for the 2025 Fastrack Young Designer of the Year, continuing its mission to nurture and showcase emerging talent in the fashion industry. The prestigious fashion incubator programme, founded by Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe, has seen past winners such as Thebe Magugu, Rich Mnisi, and Shamyra Moodley make a mark in the industry.
The call for entries is open to emerging designers between the ages of 18 and 35, who are of African nationality or residing on the continent. The deadline for submissions is on 5 May, providing a platform for young designers to showcase their creativity and passion for fashion.
AFI’s commitment to promoting African luxury brands on a global stage is evident in its collaboration with Miss South Africa 2024, Cape Town Fashion Week, and Joburg Fashion Week. The Fastrack Prize offers a unique opportunity for rising designers to receive mentorship, industry knowledge, and a supportive environment to grow their talents.
The Fastrack Prize winner will be awarded with the prestigious recognition and support from AFI, joining the ranks of past winners like Thebe Magugu, Rich Mnisi, and Shamyra Moodley. Last year’s winner, Loice Dube, has continued to make waves in the industry, showcasing the talent nurtured by the AFI programme.
Thebe Magugu, who won the Fastrack Prize in 2015, has been lauded by industry insiders and fashion icons like Naomi Campbell for his revolutionary work. Campbell praised Magugu’s innovative approach to fashion and his commitment to showcasing other creatives through his cultural hub in Johannesburg. Magugu’s recent foray into DJing has added another dimension to his creative pursuits, further solidifying his position as a trailblazing designer.
The collaboration between Magugu and Grammy-winning artist Zakes Bantwini at an intimate party highlighted the designer’s versatility and passion for music. Magugu’s ability to transcend traditional boundaries in fashion and explore new avenues of creativity has garnered him international acclaim and recognition.
As AFI continues to nurture and elevate African talent in the fashion industry, the Fastrack Prize remains a coveted opportunity for emerging designers to showcase their skills and make a mark on the global stage. With a rich history of supporting and celebrating young talent, AFI’s commitment to promoting African luxury brands is evident in the success stories of past Fastrack winners.
