Deputy IGP Christian Tettey Yohuno Files Defamation Suit Against Captain Smart
The Deputy Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tettey Yohuno, has taken legal action against popular broadcaster Blessed Godsbrain Smart, also known as Captain Smart, and Media General Limited by filing a defamation suit at the Accra High Court.
The suit, which was lodged on Thursday, January 2, 2025, comes in response to claims made by Captain Smart during a radio and TV program on December 27, 2024.
According to court documents, Captain Smart accused certain individuals within the Ghana Armed Forces and some officials of the Ghana Police Service of planning to destabilize the country’s constitutional order through a potential coup d’état. The broadcaster also allegedly claimed that Yohuno’s appointment as Deputy IGP was politically motivated.
Captain Smart went on to allege that Yohunu had been visiting the homes of National Democratic Congress (NDC) officials while being a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The claims insinuated that Yohuno had been providing these officials with money in exchange for securing his appointment as IGP.
In response to these allegations, the Deputy IGP is seeking general damages for defamation, as well as an injunction to prevent Captain Smart and Media General from making further defamatory statements. Yohunu is also requesting that the court compel the defendants to retract their statements and issue a public apology through the media house.
This legal action comes at a time of heightened political tensions in Ghana, with Yohuno taking a stand to defend both his personal reputation and the integrity of the Ghana Police Service from what he believes to be false and damaging accusations.
While Captain Smart has yet to respond, many are expecting the outspoken broadcaster to address the lawsuit in the coming days.
