The Democratic Alliance (DA) has announced Cilliers Brink as its mayoral candidate for Tshwane in the upcoming 2026 local government elections. Brink previously served as mayor of the city for 18 months before being removed in a motion of no confidence. He was elected through a coalition backed by Herman Mashaba’s party, but was ousted when ActionSA shifted its alliance to support the ANC-Economic Freedom Fighters-led coalition.
Before his role as a Tshwane councillor, Brink was a DA MP. The party recently opened applications for mayoral candidates in cities like Tshwane, Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, and Mangaung. DA federal chair Helen Zille stated that the party’s goal is to govern and rescue these troubled metros in the upcoming elections.
During the announcement of Brink as the Tshwane candidate, DA leader John Steenhuisen emphasized the importance of improving the lives and livelihoods of Tshwane residents. He urged voters to support the DA in the elections, highlighting the close race between the ANC and the DA in the council.
In his acceptance speech, Brink expressed his determination to continue the work he started as mayor to build a capable city. He criticized the ANC for years of mismanagement and corruption, accusing them of making Tshwane ungovernable and bringing the city to the edge of financial ruin.
Brink highlighted the progress made during his previous tenure as mayor, including appointing competent professionals to management positions and moving the city forward. He emphasized the need for change and a focus on good governance to ensure Tshwane’s success.
As the DA prepares for the upcoming elections, Brink’s candidacy represents a commitment to restoring order and accountability in Tshwane. Voters will have the opportunity to decide the future direction of the city and make their voices heard through their votes.
