Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Matlou opened up about the challenges he faced in his career, following an outstanding performance in Amakhosi’s 4-0 victory over Free Agents FC in the Nedbank Cup last 32 at FNB Stadium on Sunday.

Matlou, who recently made his comeback to the Chiefs squad after recovering from a long-term knee injury, expressed his gratitude towards the medical team and coaches for their unwavering support during his rehabilitation process. The 26-year-old made his return to action this month after being sidelined for over a year.

“It is a bit emotional really,” Matlou shared with SuperSport TV after completing his first full 90 minutes for Chiefs since September 2023. He also showcased his skills in Chiefs’ 1-0 Betway Premiership triumph against Sekhukhune on January 19.

“It has been a really hard journey. I am very grateful to the medical team and coaches for believing in me. I thank God, here I am again playing. And thanks to my teammates for helping me to be the George that I know,” Matlou expressed.

Chiefs have faced setbacks in the Nedbank Cup in the past, but they delivered a professional performance on Sunday. Pule Mmodi netted a brace in the first half, while Inacio Miguel and Ranga Chivaviro added to the scoreline in the second half.

“We went out positively, but it is not easy. Playing against a lower division team, they give it their all. Playing against Chiefs is a motivation for every player. We didn’t underestimate them, we were positive and played our normal game,” Matlou reflected.

“Everyone dreams of playing for Chiefs, but not everyone understands the challenges that come with it. I feel privileged and honored to wear the jersey, and I am grateful to the medical team for giving me this opportunity,” he added.

Matlou’s determination and perseverance have paid off as he continues to make a significant impact on the field for Kaizer Chiefs. His return to form is a testament to his resilience and the unwavering support he has received from the club’s medical staff and coaching team.
