Hope for Africa’s Most Genetically Vulnerable Predator at Lalibela Wildlife Reserve
As the warm autumn light bathes Lalibela Wildlife Reserve in the Eastern Cape, a heartwarming wildlife tale quietly unfolds amidst the tall grass. Six cheetah cubs, just three weeks old, make their debut on the reserve’s thermal cameras, cuddled close to their watchful mother.
These new arrivals not only signify a boost in numbers for Lalibela’s cheetah population but also bring hope for one of Africa’s most genetically vulnerable predators. With less than 7,000 cheetahs left in the wild, each birth holds profound significance for a species balancing on a genetic tightrope.
General Manager Johann Lombard sheds light on the cheetahs’ genetic predicament, stating, “The global cheetah population stems from approximately 10 breeding pairs, resulting in almost identical genetic makeup among today’s cheetahs.”
This genetic uniformity poses various challenges for cheetah conservation efforts, leading to higher cub mortality rates, decreased reproductive success, and increased susceptibility to diseases.
“These cubs mark a new chapter in our ongoing cheetah conservation journey,” Lombard remarks. “While their arrival is cause for celebration, we are concurrently implementing a comprehensive genetic management strategy to secure a sustainable future for these cats within Lalibela and across other South African reserves.”
Guests visiting Lalibela can witness this conservation narrative firsthand during daily game drives. Whether staying at one of the reserve’s six unique lodges, visitors may have the chance to observe the mother cheetah hunting at dawn or dusk. However, the cubs will likely remain hidden for a few more weeks as their mother relocates them to different hiding spots to protect them from potential predators like lions, hyenas, and other carnivores while imparting essential survival skills.
