ChatGPT Surpasses Instagram and TikTok to Become Most Downloaded App in March 2025
Recent data from app intelligence firm Appfigures has revealed that OpenAI’s ChatGPT achieved a remarkable milestone in March 2025 by becoming the most downloaded non-gaming app globally. With a staggering 46 million new downloads recorded during the month, ChatGPT saw a significant 28% increase from the previous month, marking its highest monthly performance to date.
This achievement marks the first time ChatGPT has claimed the top position in global app downloads, surpassing long-standing leaders Instagram and TikTok. The shift in consumer preferences within the competitive landscape of content and productivity apps is evident as ChatGPT took the lead, pushing Instagram and TikTok to second and third place, respectively.
AI Image Features Drive Viral Growth
The surge in ChatGPT’s popularity can be attributed to several key updates introduced in March, notably a major enhancement to its image-generation capabilities. OpenAI unveiled new features that allow users to create images and memes in the style of Studio Ghibli, the renowned Japanese animation studio.
This innovation sparked widespread engagement across social media platforms, driving viral growth for ChatGPT. Additional improvements, including upgrades to its AI voice assistant and relaxed image moderation policies, further enhanced the app’s creative and conversational utility.
Year-Over-Year Growth and Industry Trends
ChatGPT’s success aligns with broader trends in AI adoption, as Appfigures reported a significant 148% year-over-year increase in downloads from Q1 2021 to Q1 2025. This growth indicates the growing mainstream acceptance of AI tools among users.
Despite ChatGPT’s ascent, Meta’s apps maintained a strong presence in the top rankings, with Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp securing positions in the global top five. Other notable apps in the top 10 included Threads and CapCut, showcasing the diverse range of apps capturing user engagement.
