Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been released from custody by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after spending six days in detention. The news of his release was confirmed by NPP General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, who addressed the media and party supporters gathered at the EOCO headquarters in Accra.
Chairman Wontumi’s release came after his lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, announced on Friday, 30th May, that he had met the bail conditions of GH₵50 million with two sureties, both to be justified. However, his release was delayed due to a request for a review of the bail conditions, which was later withdrawn on Monday, 2nd June.
Grateful for the support in securing Wontumi’s bail, Mr Kodua expressed appreciation to former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong. He acknowledged Dr Acheampong for presenting his properties to secure Chairman Wontumi’s release, stating that all his properties were verified, leading to Wontumi’s freedom.
In response to the recent events, Mr Kodua cautioned the NDC, stating that if they choose to pursue legal action, the NPP is prepared to meet them in court with their team of senior lawyers. He reassured the public that Chairman Wontumi has been released and is now at home resting.
Chairman Wontumi was taken into custody by EOCO officers on Tuesday, 27th May, as part of ongoing investigations into allegations of fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. The Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai, mentioned that the investigation is also focused on asset recovery to prevent the dissipation of properties suspected to be proceeds of crime.
Furthermore, Chairman Wontumi is believed to have ties to an international organised crime network, prompting EOCO to collaborate with global law enforcement agencies on this matter. His release is expected to ease political tensions that have been escalating due to his detention, calming the nerves of NPP leaders and supporters.
Overall, Chairman Wontumi’s release signifies a significant development in the ongoing investigations and legal proceedings surrounding his alleged involvement in criminal activities. The NPP remains vigilant and ready to defend their member in any legal battles that may arise from these accusations.
