The celebration of Chinese Language Day at the University of Cape Coast and selected basic schools in the Central Region highlighted the significance of the Chinese language and cultural exchange in Ghana. The event featured impressive performances by Chinese language learners, including traditional lion dances, martial arts demonstrations, and renditions of Chinese songs, showcasing the growing interest in the Chinese language and culture.
Established by the UN Department of Public Information in 2010, Chinese Language Day aims to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity while promoting the equal use of all six official working languages within the organization. This year’s theme, “Chinese language, a gift across time and space,” was graced by the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Tong Defa. In his address, Ambassador Tong emphasized the importance of language as a bridge for communication and a vital tool for international cooperation.
Ambassador Tong noted the flourishing Chinese language education in Ghana and highlighted the role of Confucius Institutes in fostering cultural exchanges between China and Ghana. He praised the commitment of Ghanaian students who have embraced the Chinese language, strengthening the bond between the two nations.
The Central Regional Director of Education, Emmanuel Essuman, commended the Confucius Institute for promoting multilingualism among students in collaboration with the regional education directorate. Mr. Essuman emphasized the necessity for educators to be versatile and forward-thinking in an interconnected world, where the ability to navigate multiple languages and cultures is essential.
Prof. Ou Yamei, Director of CIUCC, outlined the institute’s mission of fostering China-Ghana friendship through language and cultural education for mutual development. With over 14 Confucius Classrooms and teaching centers in the Central Region, CIUCC trains more than 11,000 students annually through its Bachelor of Arts in Chinese degree, proficiency courses, and cultural programs at various educational levels.
Prof. Ou emphasized the importance of quality education as a gift to youth, opening doors to high-paying careers, international scholarships, summer camps, and further study opportunities. The celebration of Chinese Language Day not only showcased the growing interest in the Chinese language and culture in Ghana but also highlighted the significance of language as a tool for fostering international cooperation and understanding.
