The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has made a final decision regarding the appeal by former Spanish football chief Luis Rubiales, upholding FIFA’s three-year suspension from all football-related activities. Rubiales had contested the ruling of the FIFA Appeals Committee, which had initially upheld his ban for conduct that was deemed contrary to the principles of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.
The incident that led to Rubiales’ suspension occurred at the Final of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023. Despite his efforts to overturn the decision, arguing for the ruling to be set aside or for the sanction to be reduced, the CAS Panel found that his behavior at the tournament constituted “multiple and serious violations” of FIFA’s regulations. As a result, the Panel deemed the punishment to be both “reasonable and proportional.”
In a statement released by CAS, it was confirmed that the appeal by Rubiales had been dismissed, and the original decision to uphold the three-year ban remained in place. This means that Rubiales is still prohibited from participating in any football-related activities for the duration of his suspension.
With CAS’s decision to reject the appeal in its entirety, Rubiales must now abide by the consequences of his actions at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023. This serves as a reminder that all individuals involved in the world of football are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with the established rules and regulations set forth by FIFA.
