Former St Louis City coach Bradley Carnell is currently without a club after parting ways with the team in July last year. However, he has now emerged as the frontrunner to replace Eric Tinkler as the head coach of Cape Town City.
Tinkler is the latest casualty in the revolving door of coaches in the Premier Soccer League, with Cape Town City announcing his departure after a string of poor results. Carnell, who has previously worked as an assistant coach for Orlando Pirates and Free State Stars, is being considered as the top candidate for the job.
Another name that has been thrown into the mix is Ernst Middendorp, a former coach of Kaizer Chiefs and Cape Town Spurs. With City struggling in the league and sitting in the bottom half of the standings, a change in leadership is seen as necessary to turn their fortunes around.
Following their recent 1-0 loss to AmaZulu, Tinkler’s last game in charge, City find themselves in 12th place with just three wins in their opening 10 matches. The club has announced that they will appoint an interim coach as they look towards a new project for the upcoming seasons.
It is speculated that Tinkler’s assistant, Diogo Peral, will take on the interim role, possibly alongside former club captain Lebogang Manyama. This new coaching setup reflects a trend in the Premiership where co-coaches are becoming more common.
With a tough fixture against Kaizer Chiefs looming, whoever takes charge will have their work cut out for them. Chiefs are coming off a 1-0 win against Chippa United and will be looking to continue their momentum in the upcoming match.
After facing Chiefs, City will then have to prepare for a challenging game against Orlando Pirates. The pressure will be on the new coaching team to deliver results and steer the team in the right direction as they navigate through a tough stretch of fixtures.
