CANAL+ and Netflix Collaborate to Expand Streaming Services in Africa
French media giant CANAL+ and streaming powerhouse Netflix have joined forces to bring a unique entertainment experience to 24 Francophone African countries. This partnership, initially established in France and Poland in 2019, marks a significant milestone in the streaming industry in Africa. CANAL+ will now offer Netflix as part of its subscription packages in Sub-Saharan Africa, making it the first operator to distribute Netflix content in these regions.
Starting in July, subscribers in these countries will have access to a wide range of Netflix content through their CANAL+ subscriptions. This collaboration aims to streamline the user experience and expand the accessibility of both platforms to a broader audience in Africa.
Pascale Chabert, Chief Content Acquisition Officer of CANAL+, expressed excitement about the extended partnership with Netflix in Africa. He stated, “Our millions of African subscribers will benefit from a unique offer, bringing together the best of CANAL+ and Netflix content in a joint package. This new agreement demonstrates CANAL+’s ability to extend its unique super-aggregation model beyond the European continent.”
With over 400 live channels, including tailored content for African audiences, and a robust digital platform, CANAL+ solidifies its position as a leading content aggregator on the continent. By integrating popular Netflix series like “Stranger Things,” “La Casa de Papel,” and “Lupin,” alongside African productions such as “Blood & Water” and “Young Famous and African,” CANAL+ enhances its content portfolio to cater to diverse viewer preferences.
For Netflix, this collaboration presents an opportunity to deepen its reach in the African market. Despite challenges such as rising subscription costs in some African countries, Netflix remains committed to investing in African content. The streaming giant has allocated significant resources to produce original content across the continent, collaborating with renowned African creators to create content that resonates globally.
The CANAL+-Netflix alliance also underscores the growing significance of Africa in the global streaming landscape. With increasing internet penetration and a youthful population, Africa offers a lucrative market for streaming services. CANAL+’s strategic acquisitions in the region, coupled with Netflix’s continued investment in African content, reflect a shared commitment to meeting the evolving entertainment needs of African audiences.
As competition in the streaming industry intensifies with new entrants like MTN’s upcoming platform, the CANAL+-Netflix partnership sets a precedent for delivering a diverse range of global and local content through accessible platforms. This collaboration not only enhances the viewing experience for subscribers in Francophone African countries but also paves the way for further innovation and growth in the African streaming market.
